Pastor Bartels was born in Ashipun, Wisconsin and attended high school at Shaler Area High School in Glenshaw, Pennsylvania. He earned an associate of arts degree from Bethany Lutheran College, Mankato, Minnesota; a bachelor of arts from Mankato State University; a master of arts from Purdue University in Indiana; and a master of divinity from Bethany Lutheran Theological Seminary, also in Mankato, Minnesota. He spent five years at King of Grace Lutheran Church in Golden Valley, Minnesota, and has been pastor of Holy Cross for more than 18 years. He and wife Sherri have been married more than 25 years. They have three sons: Matthew, Jonathan and Nathan. Pastor Bartels enjoys running, hiking, art, rocks, fossils and artifacts.
