Starving for Perfection

People with anorexia severely limit their food intake, while people with bulimia indulge in bingeing (episodes of eating large amounts of food) and purging (vomiting or using laxatives). About half of all anorexics also have bulimic symptoms.

The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) estimates that 10,000 bulimia cases and 11,000 anorexia cases were diagnosed in 1989. Studies indicate that by their first year of college, 4.5- 18% of women and 0.4% of men have histories of bulimia. As many as 1 in 100 females between the ages of 12 and 18 have struggled with anorexia.

Males account for only 5-10% of bulimia and anorexia cases. People of all races develop the disorders, but the vast majority of those diagnosed are white. Both disorders remain high on the mental health experts’ list of self-destructive behaviors among young people.

The subtle messages communicated by quick weight loss can be particularly damaging to young people like Angela. Feelings of insecurity fade rapidly. The more competent she feels, the more weight she will want to lose.

Two months after she began to take drastic measures to lose weight, Angela missed her menstrual period. Instead of concern, she actually felt relieved. In a sense, she was back to being a child again- physically at least.

Angela’s parents were concerned, too. But she didn’t notice her weight loss at first. She always wore loose, baggy clothing that concealed her withering body. What they did notice were her increasingly strange eating habits.

"She would sit at the supper table for an hour poking at her food, cutting it into tiny pieces, arranging and rearranging it on her plate, taking one bite, and then saying she was full," her mother explained. "She put herself in charge of meal preparation, baking cookies and cakes and insisting that we all eat, even though she would eat nothing herself." "It’s not only the eating that bothered me," her father added, "but the time she spent exercising- sometimes three, four, five hours a day."

Mission Project
The mission project for the first semester of this school year is the ELS mission effort to support Christian schools in the Amazon of Peru. The money will be used to support our missionaries and teachers spreading the Gospel in the cities and rainforests of Peru. Please set aside an offering for your child to bring. This offering is collected during our weekly chapel services.

Next semester’s offering will be taken in support of the Apache missions in East Fork, AZ.
