Getting help
If eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia were strictly physical diseases, parents would not hesitate to seek medical attention. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Explanations for this stem from biological, psychological, familial, and socio-cultural factors.

For Christians, the spiritual aspect is an especially important one. Self-destructive behavior is always a sign of dissatisfaction, discontent, or disregard for God’s gifts. Christian parents will want to encourage their teens with reminders of how precious they are to their heavenly Father.

Though the Bible does not specifically mention eating disorders, it does speak clearly about the sanctity of life, the value of God’s gifts, and our responsibility in caring for those gifts. Texts like 1 Corinthians 6:20- "you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body"- can serve as a good foundation for an open and honest discussion of the problem.

Prayer also needs to be an important part of the recovery regimen for Christian teens struggling with an eating disorder. Such struggles put faith to the test. God wants us to use prayer to challenge him to keep his promises to be with us, to guide us, and to strengthen us for the fight.

Anorexia and bulimia are potentially life-threatening illnesses. They can result in kidney failure and cardiac arrest. As either disorder becomes more entrenched, its damage becomes less reversible.

Mission Project
The mission project for the second semester of this school year is the WELS mission effort to support Christian schools in the Apache Land of Arizona. The money will be used to support our missionaries and teachers spreading the Gospel in the Lutheran schools at East Fork. Please set aside an offering for your child to bring. This offering is collected during our weekly chapel services.
