NEWS FOR YOU
Holy Cross Lutheran School

To Christian Parents
Vicki Hartig
Seize the Moment. . .and the Remote

What’s it going to take? Not more statistics. Not a lecture. And certainly not another article on the negative effects of America’s media on the Christian family. But as parents, our responsibility must be to at least notice the deception. For the sake of our children, we must, in Jesus’ words, "be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves" (Matthew 10:16).

Our sense of reality must be stronger and shine brighter than Hollywood’s. As Christians, we must be able to explain the distortions to others, pointing out that many of the people who portray American life on the screen disregard Christian ethics. We can pray for those people. . . but we don’t have to accept their views. What’s more- we can do something to remove the influence of their lies from our lives and the lives of our children.

The media relies on three myths to market its product.

Myth #1: The media doesn’t influence us.

Oh, yeah? Then why do our country’s most successful advertisers spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for a single, well-timed commercial? The media does affect us, and what we repeatedly view becomes a part of our own perceptions, behavior, actions, and speech.

Test this hypothesis: Has your child ever wanted a specific toy or a certain pair of jeans, based on a "cool" commercial? If a 30-second ad can have such a powerful influence, how powerful can 30 minutes, an hour, or a full-length movie be?

Mission Project
The mission project for the second semester of this school year is the WELS mission effort to support Christian schools in the Apache Land of Arizona. The money will be used to support our missionaries and teachers spreading the Gospel in the Lutheran schools at East Fork. Please set aside an offering for your child to bring. This offering is collected during our weekly chapel services.
