Seize the Moment. . .and the Remote

Myth #2: The media just reflects the real world.
Look around- at your friends, relatives, and even your neighborhood. Does that picture even come close to matching what you see on television or on the big screen? Six recent studies report that at least 80 percent of married Americans have never, ever cheated on their spouses. Yet soap operas have more than that percentage routinely breaking marriage vows of faithfulness. Reality? Hardly.

A similar disparity exists in regard to how the media depicts spiritual life, acts of violence, and rare anomalies in human behavior, such as cannibalism, incest, and so on.

The danger of depicting life in this way is that abnormal behavior can begin to seem like the norm. The viewer gets the mistaken impression that everyone is doing it- that such behavior is accepted or even expected.

We have every right and reason to want life presented more honestly. We have an obligation to point out the media’s distortions of the truth to others- especially to those who are less discerning, namely, our children.
