To Christian Parents
John Cook
Drinking- Not My Child

The US has the highest rate of teenage drug use of any industrialized nation. A Weekly Reader survey recently reported that as early as fourth grade 34% of students feel pushed by friends to drink wine coolers, and 24% say the are encourage to try cocaine or crack.

Does attending a Christian school shield a child from exposure to alcohol or drugs? Maybe. One major study, done within a larger school system in the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, indicated that the percentage of students using alcohol or drugs was lower than in the public schools. But the study also revealed a pattern of alcohol and other drug use, beginning at the elementary school level and increasing through high school. Additionally, the number of students in this system who drink and drive or ride with a person who had been drinking is at an unacceptable level. The study also showed that while other drugs are used, alcohol is the drug of choice. Whether your child attends a parochial school or a public school, the message for every Christian parent is clear: No child is immune from alcohol abuse or other drug use. The devil is on the prowl. He loves to snatch children from their Savior’s arms. And when he uses substance abuse as his ploy, his success rate increases.

1. Keep in touch
So where can Christian parents begin to abuse-proof their children? You can start with knowing your child. Keep in touch with everyday things. Children’s relationships and contacts change quickly. It is easy to lose track, especially if the contact between parent and child begins to drift. Become familiar with your child’s friends and the things they do together. Show your child that you are interested.

GradeKeeper
GradeKeeper is the teachers’ online grade book and is available for students in gr. 3-8. Please check your student’s progress regularly. Login IDs are available from your child’s teacher.

Mission Project
The mission project for the second semester of this school year is the WELS mission effort to support Christian schools in the Apache Land of Arizona. The money will be used to support our missionaries and teachers spreading the Gospel in the Lutheran schools at East Fork. Please set aside an offering for your child to bring. This offering is collected during our weekly chapel services.
