Plenty to talk about
My husband and I were blessed. We grew up in homes where our moms prayed with
us every night. We are determined to pass this habit on to our children.
Sometimes we pray with our children the common bedtime prayer, "Now I lay me
down to sleep. . ." But frequently we adapt it to fit our needs, asking God to
bless grandpas and grandmas, aunts, uncles, cousins, and sponsors.
Occasionally we’re surprised with the guest lists that appear in our children’s prayers. Anyone might be included: friends with whom we served in Brazil, folks from our home congregation, kids at school, and even ourselves. We often hear children asking God to make us all good workers in his kingdom. There are no limits to whom or what might be included.
Prayer life should include repentance and expressions of faith. We use the phrase "and forgive us our sins wherever we have done wrong" as a petition of repentance. It reminds us of sin’s total corruption in our lives and it highlights the fact that we rely entirely on God’s mercy.
To express our faith and love, we use the simple phrase "Jesus, I love you" at the end of the prayer. This little phrase keeps us focused on the real hero of our faith. And it reminds us that our response to the gospel is to love God in return. You can create your own pet phrases and expressions for prayer. The key is to include them again and again in your child’s prayer life until they become natural.
