Pray the Day Away

Handling repetition
Is there danger in using the same prayer night after night after night? Perhaps. The most obvious danger is that these repeated prayer thoughts will turn into mere recitations. One easy way to prevent that from happening is to integrate spontaneous thoughts into your prayer routine. Upcoming events, trips, misunderstandings, illnesses, or deaths may become the subject of these spontaneous prayers. We often use two prayers. The first is the standard nighttime prayer; the other is specially tailored for the events of the day.

Another way to prevent merely reciting prayers is to discuss topics before praying about them. Tell your child that you talked to Grandpa today and discuss his needs. This reminds your child to include a special petition asking God to bless Grandpa.

To prevent the Lord’s Prayer from becoming a meaningless mantra, teach your children to stop for a moment after each petition to add a specific thought of their own.

Some families use singing as part of their bedtime ritual. If your child has a hymn for memory work, use it. Sing it. Talk about it. Then pray about it.

Prayer can often be incorporated into the daily routine. Mealtime is an especially appropriate time to stop and give thanks for food and the blessings of fellowship. And, to be consistent, don’t forget to do this when you’re in a restaurant. The point is not to be conspicuous, but to remember who gives every good gift.

GradeKeeper
GradeKeeper is the teachers’ online grade book and is available for students in gr. 3-8. Please check your student’s progress regularly. Login IDs are available from your child’s teacher.

Mission Project
The mission project for the second semester of this school year is the WELS mission effort to support Christian schools in the Apache Land of Arizona. The money will be used to support our missionaries and teachers spreading the Gospel in the Lutheran schools at East Fork. Please set aside an offering for your child to bring. This offering is collected during our weekly chapel services.
