An Expression of Faith
Prayer is communication. It puts us in touch and keeps us in touch with our
heavenly Father. It would never occur to us not to teach our children to speak
to us. In the same way, prayer is a natural expression of our faith- it
demonstrates our trust in God to keep all his promises. Our children need to see
us using this miracle communication tool in our lives. It bears witness to our
confidence that he who sent his only Son to live on earth and die for us will
surely hear our prayers and come to our rescue.
As communication goes, faith comes from hearing the Word of God and remembering the sacraments, and prayer flows from a heart of faith. Praying nightly reminds our children to whom they should go to have their every need met. "Pray without ceasing." That was the godly advice for the Thessalonians, and it is for us as well. It means praying anytime-bedtime, worry-time, relief-time, hurt-time, sorrow-time, or joy-time. Ideally, our prayers include petitions and expressions of love and praise. They arrive at the heavenly Father’s throne anytime, day or night. They are intimate thoughts that address personal needs. They are spoken in the words and phrases we use in ordinary speech. And as the prayer habit grows, the prayer life of our children will become an indispensable part of their daily activity.
