Self-Esteem and Christ

We need to take an honest look at the point where humanistic psychology and biblical truth collide head-on.

If you have ever helped your child with a math assignment, you know how important it is to make sure you have not left anything out of an equation. Although building self-esteem is not as cut and dried as mathematics, the process does have certain similar components. If you leave Christ out of the equation, you will not be able to effectively develop your child’s biblical view of self.

Some self-esteem advocates say that helping your child grow up with strong self-esteem is the most important task of parenthood. They say self-esteem is the armor that protects kids from the dragons of life: drugs, alcohol, unhealthy relationships, and delinquency. God teaches us that when parents lead their children through the Word to see their Savior and immerse them in that Word, they provide their children with the armor that will protect them for a lifetime-an eternal lifetime.

Psychology says parents need to teach their children to know themselves so they might feel good about themselves. Biblical Christianity, on the other hand, directs parents to teach their children to know themselves so they might turn away from themselves and discover their life and identity in Christ Jesus.

If you buy into modern psychology and ignore Scripture, you would spend your time telling your child that he is a valuable, worthwhile human being and teaching him problem-solving skills. And he would never realize how much he needs Jesus.

Mission Project
