To Christian Parents
Kenneth Kremer
The Top Ten

Top-ten lists are popular these days. They are usually quick summaries of fairly complex issues--a natural format for a generation as hurried as ours.

Raising children is not the same thing as raising a crop of corn. Corn doesn’t have a sinful nature with which to contend. Nor does it have a personality or a whole range of personal gifts. We are clearly at risk of oversimplifying the parental role by suggesting that Christian parenting can be summarized in ten easy points. But we decided the risk was worth taking if such a list would stimulate discussion and introspection among our readers. So, for better or worse, here it is: The Top Ten Principles for Christian Parenting. Don’t be bashful about highlighting your strengths. And be honest about those areas in which you would have to admit weakness. Then use your responses to refine your approach to Christian parenting.

1. Base your parenting on sound biblical principles. Most parents pattern their approach to bringing up children after the approach their own parents took in raising them. Others rely on pop psychology or media experts to provide a foundation for parenting. Neither model is 100 percent reliable. The Bible, on the other hand, is. It consistently provides the principles that anchor godly parenting.
