To Christian Parents
Ray Shumacher
The Danger of the Dorky Dad
During a counseling session with her pastor, Shelia voiced frustration that her husband wasn’t upholding his role as family leader. That same evening, the family sat for a session of TV viewing. They watched a series of sitcoms, all of which depicted unhealthy families. Fathers were depicted as candidates for Stupidity Anonymous or witless adolescents in men’s bodies. Sheila laughed long and hard whenever an inept father was the brunt of a joke. Apparently she didn’t see the relationship between her complaint to the pastor and those sitcoms.
Some people say there is a leadership crisis in our families. Whatever we call it, there certainly is a problem. Some men are not interested in leading. Others feel inadequate, or they don’t know how. The problem seems to be growing.
Our society has witnessed disrespect for males for decades. The resulting fear, confusion, and apathy have rendered many men ill-equipped to lead. Do you want the father of your grandchildren to be able to lead them over the hills and through the valleys that will challenge them spiritually? Then you must nurture your sons in an atmosphere of respect right from the beginning.
