To Christian Parents
Ray Shumacher
The Danger of the Dorky Dad

The prevailing atmosphere of disrespect underscores the need for careful Christian nurture. A godly wife and mother needs to model respect for her husband, even when he falters at his tasks. When a husband seems to be confused about his leadership role or reluctant to take the reins, it might be necessary to show respect by quietly and privately encouraging him. Tell him what is important for your family and why. Talk about the reasons for his hesitation. Encourage him to talk with your pastor and to embark on a lifelong journey of spiritual growth through the study of God’s Word. A divorced mother will carefully weigh the things she says about her former spouse. Otherwise she may destroy her children’s respect for their father and all other men.

Fathers who want to nurture their sons as future leaders must grow as leaders themselves. If you are unsure of how to take on the role of leader, watch and learn from the respected men in your congregation. You will see that family leadership really starts by modeling devotion to God. Become a student- study God’s Word daily so the Holy Spirit can nurture the fruits of the Spirit within you. Lead your family on a path of regular Bible study and worship. Point your children to the marvelous love of God, shown by the fact that he chose us to be his own in Christ. Let your children also see that you are a man of prayer. By example, teach them integrity, honesty, and respect for all women- especially their mother. Talk to them about the things that are happening in their lives. Help them view their lives in the context of children who possess the riches of heaven.

In doing all these things, you will raise your sons and daughters in an atmosphere of respect and will nurture the next generation’s leaders.
